Etymology[edit]
Of unknown origin. It is used in the subjunctive mode of jön(“to come”) instead of the regular subjunctive forms. Its original form may have been jerj. The leading j- to gy- assimilation is similar to jön →gyön, a dialectal variant. For the dropping of the final j compare eper, szeder.[1]
